Programs can automatically start themselves from a large number of places on your computer. Software for anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, printers, and a few others are programs that you want and need to be automatically started and running all the time. When you install new programs, everything nowadays wants to put it's speed-launcher into your startup. This speed-launcher makes it so that when you click the program icon, the program will start up a little quicker because part of the files for it are already loaded into memory by the speed-launcher.
